Internships are an important part of the experiential learning that every student does at Nichols College. Our extensive alumni network reaches out into every industry and our Career and Professional Development Center works through established relationships to provide opportunities for every student who is willing to compete for the challenge.
Internships allow you to use the knowledge and skills you've developed inside the classroom, and apply them in the real world. They also give you the opportunity to test out your potential career paths. My marketing internship now has really opened my eyes to what I want to do after graduation.
Our faculty and staff are always here to help our students find the internship that's best for them. 85% of the 2016 graduates completed a 3- to 9-credit internship, many of which lead to full-time job offers.
When I graduate, I have internships at a-- Professor Liptrap set it up-- with the front office of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The way the internship process works is like, you tell them what you want to do with your life, and then they give you chances and opportunities to kind of like weed out the job opportunities that are available to you. So they give you a long list of internships that are out there, and then like they'll do everything that they can to actually make sure that you get your foot in the door.
I think that having the internship at Merrill Lynch as a financial advisor was a way to find what career path that I did want to go into. I was actually in the database in our software sales force. I was keeping notes on different clients, after the advisor that I was under would have conversations with them. I was planning client events that he would take them to. I absolutely think that Nichols prepared me, and is probably the main reason why I was able to get the internship.
The interviewer told me that I was the most professional student they'd ever had intern for them. They offered me the job. And I think that I was able to take a lot of the professional skills I learned here at Nichols, as well as the background for my Finance major, and take it to the internship to help me.
I got my internship through my neighbor. He's worked 40 years at Travelers Insurance. And through PDS, I learned about networking. This gave me the confidence to go up and approach him about a possible internship position. I feel that internships are very important because it not only got my foot in the door at a possible big corporate company, it also made me learn what my managers are going to want from me. And also how to strive to become something bigger than an entry level position.
My internship is at Dell Technologies, and I'm working with the Storage and Data Protection go-to-market team. We are working on a competitive analysis, and analyzing paid and organic social media, and also working on their search engine optimization. 4-6 interns are going to obtain a full time position. I know this internship will give me the experience I need to reach my ultimate goal of becoming a CMO for a Fortune 500 company.
I believe that Nichols has prepared me for my internship at Dell Technologies by showing me the way to act in a professional environment, and how to work on problems using critical thinking skills, and working with others in the group dynamic.
